🧰 3 Quiet Risks That Can Derail Growth

🧰 Smart tools. Useful tips. Weekly.

Hola friend 👋,

I’m Josep. Each week, I hunt down practical tools and productivity hacks to help digital doers like you do more with less effort.

This week: simple safeguards for business risks (that quietly build up in the background).

Small online businesses rightly focus on growth. But behind the scenes, a missed consent setting, a convincing phishing link, or an exposed remote setup can quickly disrupt your day. These three tools can help you put a few sensible safeguards in place.

Plus: a handy text-snippet tool for repetitive replies, a quick UTM habit for cleaner traffic data, and the costly downtime lesson behind Hasbro’s hack.

Cookiebot (Usercentrics)

Cookiebot helps you manage cookies and tracking on your website. It scans your site, shows visitors a consent banner, records their choices, and controls when non-essential analytics and ad scripts run.

That matters once your site has accumulated Google Analytics, ad pixels, chat widgets, and several lead tools. Instead of tracking firing before visitors choose, Usercentrics gives you a clearer way to respect those choices, keep your marketing data more reliable, and reduce privacy-related risks.

There’s a free plan for sites under 1,000 monthly sessions, plus a 14-day trial for paid features; setup still needs care, and pricing scales with traffic and site pages. Paid plans aren’t too expensive, starting at $8 a month.

Guardio

A scam link rarely looks like a scam link – that’s exactly why they work. It might arrive in a polished email, a Slack message, or a WhatsApp chat that appears to be from a friend asking for help with rent.

Guardio adds a useful pause before someone clicks. It warns about dangerous websites and phishing attempts as you browse. Paid plans also add data-leak alerts and account-security insights.

The important caveat: it is mainly browser-focused. It will not replace careful judgment, staff training, or proper business security. It can’t make the final call, that’s still yours.

But for a small team with busy inboxes, an extra warning at the right moment can prevent an expensive mistake.

Tailscale

The file you need is always on the office computer you’re nowhere near. Tailscale creates a private connection between approved devices, so you can reach it without leaving it openly exposed to the internet.

I use this constantly to reach my home Mac Mini from anywhere. It creates a private connection between my devices (e.g., phone, laptop, etc.), so they behave like they’re on the same network, even when I’m staying with family in the UK.

Setup is fairly approachable, and the Personal plan is free for up to six users. But beyond the basics, it can get complicated quickly – be warned, this is a potential rabbit hole.

🛠️ Alternative to: TeamViewer and traditional VPNs

✨ Totally Off-Topic… But Brilliant

Writing the same “Here’s your booking link” reply for the tenth time is a fast way to lose an afternoon. Text Blaze, a browser extension, turns short shortcuts into reusable snippets, so everyday admin takes seconds instead of several minutes.

Create templates for customer replies, meeting links, onboarding steps, refund messages, or the standard explanations you always end up rewriting. You can also add fields to personalise a message before inserting it.

There’s a free plan, while Pro adds unlimited snippets and more advanced options. The more useful stuff (e.g. dynamic templates) does take a little setup, and it’s meant for work you do in the browser.

🛠️ Alternative to: TextExpander, Magical, PhraseExpress

⚡This Week’s Productivity Hack

A link without UTM tags is like sending a package with no return address. It may bring visitors, but later you won’t know where they came from.

This is obvious to many readers, but it’s easy to forget when you’re rushing to publish. Before sharing a newsletter, LinkedIn post, ad, or partner link, add UTM tags. Analytics platforms can then show what drove the visit.

Keep it simple:

  • source = where it appeared, like linkedin
  • medium = the format, like social
  • campaign = the specific push, like october_launch

So a LinkedIn link might end with http://www.your-biz.com/campaign/?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=november_launch

Use lowercase names and stick to one naming system. Otherwise, LinkedIn, linkedin, and linkedin-post become three messy rows in your reports.

🍿 Plot Twist of the Week

A hack doesn’t need to steal your data to wreck your week. Sometimes, it only needs to stop you from working.

That was Hasbro’s reality this year (they make Peppa Pig and Transformers toys, among others). After hackers were found in its systems, the company stayed largely offline for weeks. Its website went down, customers couldn’t be served normally, and Hasbro even delayed a quarterly SEC filing – read more.

For a small business, imagine losing your website, customer inbox, shared files, and booking system at the same time. Orders get delayed, customer questions go unanswered, and even simple tasks become a struggle.

The lesson: back up your essential files and have a plan for keeping things running if your usual tools go offline 🫠.

That’s it for this week. Thanks for reading! Next time: practical ways to turn more website visitors into trust, leads, and booked conversations.

Cheers,

Josep
